Status of highlighting difficulties?

Postby jnuttallphd » Thu Mar 18, 2004 9:55 am

Hello Ken:

Have you been able to figure out the highlighting problems with 2.030? Or do you need some additional feedback concerning this situation?

highlighting problems with 2.030b

Postby entryreqrd » Thu Mar 18, 2004 2:35 pm

Jim, I'm wondering the same thing about the highlighting. I have continued highlighting problems and also a sort of highlighting/scrolling spastic attack with TA2.030b. Sometimes the whole text area gets all screwy for a moment or, so, but then falls back into sync. I would like to see the next beta build and see if any of these problems have been resolved. Hey Ken/Jim when is the next build going to be released? ttl Paul

Next build should be sometime next week.

I'm having a tough time pinning down the highlighting problem. If you can duplicate consistently, can you tell if its a specific pattern of text that causes it, and if so send me the text ? For whatever reason I can't seem to duplicate it.

Windows 2000 problem

Postby jnuttallphd » Thu Mar 18, 2004 11:11 pm

Hello Ken:

A highlighting problem with 2.030 is not happen with my Windows XP system. It is happening with my Windows 2000 system. It doesn't matter what the text is. It is not tracking with highlighting on that 2000 system. The tracking problem appears to exacerbate when you do the proofread function.

Also with the Windows XP system when I highlight a large amount of text and use the proofread function, it at times lose tracking of a highlighting. But generally the highlighting is working with Windows XP. Does this help?

highlighting problem

Postby DaveH » Fri Mar 19, 2004 8:08 am

Using windows xp the problem is voice dependent. The following expression is read correctly by Carol but highlighting goes astray with ATT Audrey(16K).

Hope this helps.

What's more,
it had recently bought back a massive slug of its own stock --
about 23% of the company for $175 million in a tender

(1) Does the highlighting go off around the hyphen at the end of the second line ? If so, I tried to fix this in 2.030B, but looks like its still a problem, but I only see it with Audrey, Rosa and Klara. I'll try something different in 2.031B.

(2) Does the problem go away if you insert a space into the text immediately after the hyphen ?

(3) Have any of you seen any kind of highlighting problem with AT&T Crystal or Mike ?

It really sounds like Jim -- Michigan is seeing something a little different. I sent Jim something to write extra information to debug files, hopefully this will point at whatever the problem is on the win2k system.

Highlighting problem

Yes it does go off around the hyphen.

If text follows the hyphen on the same line then the highlighting is OK. The problem seems to arise when the hyphen is the last symbol on the line. Inserting a space at the beginning of the following line does not cure it.

(3) Have any of you seen any kind of highlighting problem with AT&T Crystal or Mike ?

I had only been using Audrey but will switch voices to check this. For this example Crystal and Mike work OK.

Using Crystal for a long file after about 20 mins the highlighting is OK so it seems to be a problem with Audrey in Windows XP.

Some progress on this.

After looking through debugs from Jim -- Michigan, I noticed that Jim has both AT&T versions 1.3 and 1.4 installed on his system. TextAloud seems to be accessing the 1.3 engine.

I went back to AT&T 1.3 on my xp system here, and duplicated the problem immediately. It looks like the AT&T 1.3, SAPI4 engines do not return valid word position offsets if pauses are embedded in the text. To get highlighting to work, I had to either disable the end of sentence/paragraph pauses, or switch to the SAPI5 engine. Not sure I can fix this particular problem, the offsets I'm getting back are way off, and seem too far off to correct.

So I think we have three different things contributing to highlighting problems:
1. Audrey, Klara, Rosa return incorrect offsets if non-alphanumeric character is at end of line.
2. AT&T 1.3, SAPI4 with embedded pauses
3. The problem mentioned in earlier post about large amount of text copied to proofreader.

Is there anything else out there I'm missing ?

Jim, I have seen a problem where the screen freaks out, the text looks like it doesn't repaint properly and the voice gets screwy. I have not seen a voice dependency, but will pay attention to punctuation and I am running 98SE. When I come across this again, tonight or over the weekend, I'll make sure I can reproduce it, and ship the files off to you again, so you can work on them. This is not just the highlighting problem, this extends to all the text on the screen. Paul

Paul,

When you're duplicating this, I'm really interested to hear if the problem depends on how much text you're copying from the clipboard. Not sure its the same thing you're seeing, but on my win98 machine here I can get behavior similar to this by loading an article with 1M of text from the clipboard. If this is the kind of problem you're running into, 2.031B will automatically split large clipboard text into multiple articles. We may have to tune the max article size to get it right.

The problem with long sentences causing the Microsoft voices to act strange is still out there too.

Let me know what you find, and email the debug files. Thanks.

Hot keys and highlighting

Postby Mike Burton » Mon Mar 29, 2004 1:49 am

Using Windows 2000 5.00.2195 Using Mozilla as a browser in which I'm copying or reading text.
I'm finding that when setting up the hot keys
for Speak Text directly-- it will work some times, then not. I have no trouble importing new text to the clipboard.
Found no ref in the help files for hot keys.
I am enjoying the program though. Thanks!

Mike,

Next time you see the speak hotkey fail like this, would you look in your TextAloud install directory for the file TextAloudMP3.dbg and send it to me ? (jim@nextup.com).

Thanks
