stereo / mono bug

Postby Bunger Henry » Tue Dec 13, 2005 11:46 am

I noticed a problem with Textaloud last night, listening to an article being read with the Paul voice over my headphones. The voice seemed to be switching randomly between stereo and mono. This made the article hard to listen to. When I recorded the article as an MP3 file in mono and played it back, it sounded fine, so the problem was not with a bad headphone connection. Is this problem related to Textaloud or is it something else?

Not exactly sure. one thing to note is that in general, you should always make the files mono. Speech really is always mono, there isn't anything capable of adding another channel of anything interesting. So the only time you should ever be making stereo files is if the eventual user of the audio file requires it. For example, there may be some CD burning software out there that will only recognize stereo files. Unless you have that specific need, then all you are doing is wasting file space, since making them stereo really should only be making both channels the same.

I think I've fixed the problem. It wasn't just with TextAloud, but all wave files were having problems...skipping and popping. Textaloud voices were switching between stereo and mono and sometimes skipping.

I finally just reloaded all of the sound card driver files and rebooted. Everything seems to be working now.

I don't know if TextAloud or some other program corrupted the drivers, but something caused this bug to appear.
