when i upgraded from Win98 to XP, the wav files I now generate are not able to be used by some other software I have. I assume they are there, but they just don't play. Is there something about compatability with XP?

Other software?

Hello anubis --
What other software are you referring to? I use Windows XP and have no difficulty with TextAloud MP3 or MP3 files created by TextAloud.

I have a copy of "audacity", and have it set as the default program associated with WAV files. I am doing development work with virtual environments bsed on the Quake 2 engine, and neither of these will open the files created by text aloud. I had no problems with Win98, but once I upgraded my OS I seem to. I'm at a critical stage with my development, and I don't need strange things happening at the moment.

Have never heard of this type of thing before. Are you using the same voices as before to create the audio files? Do you have any of the waves you created when on win98 to try now? Would be a good experiment to see whether something with the creation, or the playback has changed.

Yes I used the AT&T Natural Voices both under 98 and XP. I can play the files created under windows media player, and windows sound recorder, but with Audacity st as the default player, I get a message saying it can't open the file. I'm at a loss.....

Could it be anythign related to the directory they are being stored in? Try putting them into something like c:\audio instead of the likely MyDocuments location you have them in now and see if the other program will open them.

Under “What is Audacity?” at http://audacity.sourceforge.net/about.php
I found the following verbiage.

“Audacity version 1.0.0 is the most stable version we have released yet, and many people have found that its unique features and intuitive interface make it more enjoyable to use than other audio editors, including commercial ones.
The developers of Audacity have also released version 1.2.0-pre2, which is a beta-quality preview of new things we are actively working on. It contains many, many new features, but is not quite as polished and stable.”

Which version of Audacity are you using?
Will your wav files created by TextAloud play in a session of Windows Media Player?
