If all you are using is Sam, "s'oy" works fine. Of course, it messes up everybody else....

Hope this helps,

Michael

A good trick. If you have Windows XP and your doing voice switches with Sam and another voice, you can use that soy trick there, she means about entering it in the pernounciation editor. He is not a ROLFLcopter anymore!

It's to do with that I'm using SAPI4 version of Sam. Are you using SAPI5 version of Sam?

It only works on the SAPI5 version of Sam. The SAPI4 version of Sam will say swa.

I was originally testing it with SAPI5. But now that I know you're using SAPI4, soeey seems to fix it. Soey just sounds like s'why with that version.

I tried it on Windows XP and the soy works fine. Including on vista, SAPI4 Sam says soy fine, but he says, soyee. How could we get him to say soy, just how it should be?

So-E is basically how I say it. The phonetics of the word are more or less s oh iy to my ear because of our accent up North.

The only other sound I can think of that someone would use is maybe s oh ay, and I managed to get Sam to pronounce it that way by respelling the word as soay. Is that a little closer?

If that doesn't work, perhaps you could tell me how you pronounce it by breaking it down? Then maybe I can experiment further to find the sound you'd prefer.

I say soy like this:
S oy
S with oy.

Oops. I also forgot to add that the only way to really get a sound for the word is to use it in a full sentence.

This is what I found so far with the following test sentences:
Would you like some soay sauce with that?

Do you like to eat soy?

Soy
If you test each of these, Sam appears to pronounce Soy differently when it's followed by sauce.

In order to sound semi-right to my own ear, I made the following edits in a dictionary set up specifically for Sam:

Soy sauce: soay sauce

Soy: soeey

With those two edits in the dictionary, the word sounded a little more normal to me.
