Is this a public beta?

Postby Samlaptop85213 » Sun Mar 01, 2009 4:12 pm

Is this a public beta for all users, or will the other users receive a public beta build?

Hi Sam,

All 3.0 beta builds we do from now on are public builds. Anyone is welcome to give the builds a try.

Question -- I'd like to get involved with this beta, but I'm wondering how easy it will be to "downgrade" to the latest non-beta build if the need arises. Thanks!

You can run them side-by-side. Just install TA3 into a separate directory. I did it this way for a couple of weeks until I was comfortable enough to use it as my "production" version. Having been involved since Beta 8 or 9 and being a really heavy user, I'd be surprised if you didn't like it enough right away to use it as your production version, too.

That said, the pronunciation editor entries are stored in a completely different format to accommodate the new functionality and you won't be easily able to revert any entries you enter into the new TA editor back to TA2x.

Interesting. If I install it in a different directory can I just copy over the new files and leave the originals intact? Or I guess I could just save copies and restore them.

When you install the beta, it will import your existing TA2 pronunciation editor definitions. Like Sean said, the TA3 dictionary format is completely different, but once your TA2 pronunciations have imported, the pronunciation editors for both versions should look the same.

From that point on, if you run both TA2 and TA3, you'll need to add new pronunciation editor corrections in both places, we don't have anything now to keep the two in sync.

Let me know if that doesn't answer your question.
