Smart Quotes (and single-quotes)

Postby kremesch » Fri Jan 09, 2009 8:01 pm

I have found two consistent weaknesses with both NeoSpeech & AT&T so far.

For NeoSpeech:
Smart Quotes cause NeoSpeech to skip the first letter of a sentence every time. I've only noticed this in word (XP), not tested in IE or Firefox.
There is an easy fix in the dictionary for this
Code: Select all
Text Matching:    Simple Text    “ (copy and Paste from Word or use ASCII)
Vendor:       NeoSpeech
Pronounce Using:    Respell    "
Word Boundary Condition: Word boundary required on left

For AT&T:
Smart Single-Quotes causes AT&T to read as two separate words/sounds didn’t = didden tee; it’s = it ess. This occurs in Both Word (XP) and Firefox 3 (not tested in IE)
Solution is similar for NeoSpeech:
Code: Select all
Text Matching:    Simple Text    ‘(copy and Paste from Word or use ASCII)
Vendor:       AT&T Labs
Pronounce Using:    Respell    '
Word Boundary Condition: No word boundary required

Anyway, I just thought I’d report this and wasn’t sure if it should be considered a bug. So, I posted it here.

I just added something in the next build that should handle this problem without needing to create dictionary entries. The build, beta 6, should be up shortly, so you can try disabling your dictionary entries and see if TextAloud handles the problem for you.

Thank you. I just disabled them and tested it before I saw this thread and it's working great in that aspect.
