AT&T's TTs voices clashing with SAPI.cpl

Postby Rafter » Fri Dec 05, 2008 9:46 pm

Hi group,
I just purchased and installed AT&T's TTS voice for Rosa and Crystal, they seem to work fine while converting a simple text (2 senteces) into a wav file via an application I created. For some odd reason I noticed that at times the wav file is not being created. Following my suspicions I proceeded to the Control Pane -> Speech to confirm the presence of the TTS voices. When selecting the speech option from the control panel I get the following message:

---------------------------
Speech Properties
---------------------------
The requested task cannot be carried out because the necessary engine could not be created. Please select a different engine and/or a different audio device.
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

After dismissing the above message, I am given the option to click on the Text To Speech tab. When I click on the Speech > TTS tab, I get the following error:

---------------------------
Speech Properties
---------------------------
The requested task cannot be carried out because the necessary engine could not be created. Please select a different engine and/or a different audio device.
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

When dismissing the above dialog box the speech panel closes abruptly, leaving me without the ability to use the TTS engines, temporarily, then mysteriously the SAPI control panel fixes itself after a while, odd, eh?

My system is a Win XP Pro SP2 with Speech SDK 5.1 and AT&T Rosa and Crystal installed.

I realize that the AT&T TTS should be pretty stable, but have any of you experience similar behavior as described above?

Your advice would be greatly appreciated!

Did you know that service pack 3 is released?

I don't konw about those errors but you are out-of-date with the service pack.

Yes, I am aware that SP3 for XP is available, I had it before, but I rolled back to SP2 while trouble shooting this very issue without any luck.

I need to make a small correction to the information provided on my original post, the message associated with the second dialog box is:

---------------------------
RUNDLL
---------------------------
An exception occurred while trying to run "H:\WINDOWS\system32\shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL "H:\WINDOWS\system32\sapi.cpl",Speech"

---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

That said AT&T's TTS have been around for a while and should be very stable. I found some interoperability issues between the SAPI 5.1 SDK and a third party application I currently have installed in my system, so perhaps I rushed to judgment with regards to the TTS engine . I think I narrowed down the cause & effect, so I am pursuing a solution with the third party app provider and will follow up with more details to share in this post community once I have new data, just in case any one else run into similar issues.

cheers.
